Arnie Schwarzenegger as a communist? I couldn't see him as a communist. It goes against his terminator/Conan the Barabarian Hollywood persona. I actually think that he is slowly positioning himself as California's first fascist dictator. That's right! California, the most liberal state in the union next to New York. Arnie is going to purify the state by forcing undesirables to live in concentration camps where they will be force fed protein drinks and made to work out in the gym 16 hours a day. Political girly-men will be humiliated verbally and forced to watch Predator on DVD until they learn to accept the new state doctrine! He is currently raising an army of muscle bound uber-men, whose job it will be to abduct and deprogram liberal Hollywood hippies, eventually converting them into useful subjects of the state. His reign of terror won't end until there's a 24-hour gym on every block!

New York is a hip-hop town. They haven't had a thriving goth scene there since the late 80's, early 90's. Most big cities in the U.S. have small goth scenes with a few die-hards, but nothing like what LA's got. I remember traveling to Illinoise and Indiana a few years ago and noticing how small their scenes were. Kids often just hung out and drank coffee at the local Denny's restaurants or truck stops because there were so few places for them to go and socialize at. For example, Chicago's night-life is pretty much dominated by sports bars and techno/disco clubs. I believe there are maybe two or three goth/industrial clubs still operating around the city, but they are each relatively small and attract very few patrons.

If you travel through out most of the greater U.S., you might get the impression that goth is dead or that it barely exists. However, if you visit LA, you won't have to look hard to find a decent goth store or night-club, and goth and industrial bands are always playing large venues. I can't think of anywhere else in the U.S. where a band like Bauhaus, who haven't toured or recorded an album since 1983, can fill an Amphitheatre with a 10 thousand person capacity.

I wish I could comment about the goth scene in other states.  The LA scene is a lot of fun outside of the goth stuff too though.  This last weekend was busy with the  inkslinger's ball  (http://www.inkslingersball.com/) and some fetish art exhibit I didn't make it to.  In mid October the Bizarre Vampire Bazaar (http://www.vampirebazaar.com/) is happening.  Just south of us is a kick-ass Oktoberfest (http://www.alpinevillage.net/) that we make it to every year (with actual German people in charge) where I can dance with 90 year old women while wearing a Motorhead shirt.  The Bondage Ball (http://www.bondageball.com/) happens a couple of times a year.  Whenever you come here there will be something to do in addition to the weekly clubs and if you get bored you can go walk down Sunset and take a picture of where River Phoenix died outside the Viper Room.

I'm pretty happy with our scene, but that may be because I'm from Orange County, where people live like they drive - asleep and wearing horse-blinders, wondering what is on sale at Best Buy.

As for Manson, I actually like his music, I just never cared about his whole image (beyond my delight in pissing off the religious right).  His stage performance at last year's Ozzfest was fun, but some dumbass put him on while it was still light outside so it killed the atmosphere.  Also the place was crawling with Marines....  I think Manson is a really big deal for high school kids who haven't explored non-mainstream music yet, but most people I know either like his music or don't, but either way they don't think about him very much.

I'm just still pissed that I wasn't allowed to bring my bottle of booze to the stage last time he played on the meraluna festival (I was told he was afraid that some weired guys would throw the empty bottles ...)

That was ridiculous 'cause the place was covered with paving stones. It was even possible to buy swords and other medieval weapons at a sales booth.  

Of course noone tried to harm him and noone throw a stone, but we've been forced to buy the expensive (and not really tastefull) beer

I have read a thread at lagoth about one of your trips to the Oktoberfest. Would you please tell your people the correct spelling of "Lederhosen", "Liebchen" and "Knackwurst" and that actual former Gestapo Agents are now probably too old to yank off anybody from the stage! So some (young) Samoans are probably the best choice. Also because you are regarded as skinny if you weigh less than a hundred kilos on Samoa.

Just to give you some information about the Oktoberfest. This is a bavarian thing and not all germans are running around in Lederhosen, eat sausages the whole day, drink beer from 1-litre jars and listen to that horrible Ufftata-music. We are North germans, Protestants, liberals... You know, the bavarians are a kind of our Texas. I guess you know what I mean.    Ok, it is not as bad as England and Scotland. I mean they are still germans, but they are culturely slightly different. And I have to confess (not without being a bit jealous) that Bavaria is probably the most beautiful part of Germany. The Mountains, all the castles and the medievel town centers. Just beautiful. If it weren't inhabitated by....

I agree about what you wrote about Manson and young people. Here most gothics began with Depeche Mode, The Cure or Sisters of Mercy. In my case it was Sisters. I can still remember when I was still thinking that Sisters of Mercy were the coolest band on earth! Cute... Hey does Andrew Eldridge not live in Hamburg? Well, some of the locals may correct me if I am wrong. I have seen Manson once on the Hurricane festival in Scheeßel. He was playing in the bright sunshine. And yes...that really sucks! The atmosphere was completely disrupted. At least Rammstein had their show at night! Otherwise their fire show would have been useless!

@ Schneeball: Watching "Predator" the whole day? Well, it could be worse...it could be "Twins" or "Conan". With Predator you are still quite lucky.

Actually sad that in most of America this music is so less appreciated. I think there are a lot of creative people into that music. In Germany the scene made quite a development in the recent years. I have the impression that the actual dark and depressive Goth music gave way to more electronic or metal-like sounds which are easier to bear for non-gothics. Whenever I brought some of my friends who actually don't like that music they started to like it and they asked me if I could borrow them some CDs. I just want to say that goth music played in Discos (not what the people listen at home) became a bit more mainstream in Germany and sometimes you may think that you are in a Technodisco, only that everybody is dressed in Black. Which is sometimes a bit sad, I think.

That's interesting about the Bavarians.  Liza (my wife) didn't know that either despite growing up near Rotterdam and going to Germany a lot, so I got to make fun of her for being a fake European.    Most people I talk to, admittedly I mostly talk to liberal-minded people, agree that Texas could secede from the US tomorrow and we wouldn't mind.

I recently had the displeasure of watching a couple old Arnold movies and yes, Predator would be a treat compared to almost any other one.  The first Conan was even good compared to most, although it was pretty funny watching someone that lumpy swing a sword.  They were going for the "master swordsman" look; they achieved "weightlifter with sword" look.  I was very young when I first saw Commando and the others so I remembered them being really good.  I should have left it at that.  

The Oktoberfest thing is fun in the same way that watching Army of Darkness is fun.  It's just so dumb it's hilarious.  Why on earth would a bunch of people from LA want to milk a cow or do the chicken dance to bizarre music played by people in little green outfits?  I suppose I should start picking up some German anyway, if only to understand some of the music I listen to.  It can't hurt to know what the hell Sven Vath is talking about.

And yeah, the problem I had logging in was from not responding to the intro email because the message telling me to respond was in German.   :roll:   I should have seen that one coming anyway since I'm on about 5-6 mailing lists at any time.
