Greetings from Los Angeles! I'm new to this board and my German is very limited. I hope you don't mind me posting in English. Your forum rocks! It seems to be far superior, both visually and in terms of content, than the numerous American Goth/Industrial forums I see on the net.
-
Then you haven't been to gothling.com
-
Welcome on this board, and thanks for the fish =)
I hope you'll enjoy your time, maybe you will find someone who could translate on ore another topic from the other forums to you :) I think there are some topics which could be very interesting...
Have fun!
-
Heya, a warm welcome from me too.
May I ask you, how you found this place here?
-
Now that's a surprise -
Welcome on board. It's nice to see some people posting from the other side of the world.

-
The other side? Thought there's nothing beyond the horizon =)

Welcome here and enjoy your time on the board. If you have any problems with understanding topics/texts you're interested in, don't hesitate to ask.
Have fun!

Welcome Schneeball! :)

Welcome and enjoy your time here!

so, schneeball..
Tell us, how's the scene in LA? Any good clubs and partys over there? Is there a living subculture?
I haven't met any goths (or whatever you call them) from the states so far, but my impression from visiting scene related websites and chatting is that the us-scene is dominated by marilyn manson fans (I hope that this is a false impression.. nothing against MM, but I like variety).

Me and Schneeball heard about this board from a Der Uhu posting on http://www.lagoth.net/toast/toast.asp. It sounds interesting to meet like-minded people from across the planet. Too bad I don't know any German. I can't even curse, which is of course the first thing anyone learns. <shrug> I grew up 1 hour from Mexico so I learned Spanish instead.
And no, I wouldn't say that the goth scene here (LA) is dominated by Manson or his fans. He gets the most press because of the stunts he pulls, but if you spend 4 hours at a club you'll likely only hear 2 songs from him. The younger crowd is enamored with him, maybe to piss off their parents, I don't know.
We (my wife Liza and I) were actually discussing moving to Germany in about 2 years when she finishes school, especially if Bush wins again. She's Dutch, and we were thinking of moving to Amsterdam after she graduates, but we're afraid that Amsterdam could turn into Rotterdam with large groups of angry young men roaming around looking for trouble.
-
Hi Schneeball! Great to see you here! Welcome!
@Mr_Bateman: Well, too bad that you do not understand the language, but if want to move to Germany some day you should really learn some turkish. That would help in most of Germany! And for the rest german would be useful.
Well, that you can not read our Threads is a problem. But perhaps you could start your own Threads in english and we will answer in english.
One idea: You could start a Thread about Hamburg to give us the chance to convice you to come here in two years. You know, the people in this town regard it as the most beautiful town on earth. They even have TV-Spots saying that. Even though this is a product of extreme self-overestimation a little bit of truth lies in it.
Greetings
Der Uhu

Peoples Republic of California? Did Schwarzenegger turn into a communist? hihihi....

Thanks everyone, I'm happy to be here.
Hey Bateman! Glad to see that you were finally able to login. I bet the problem you were having had something to do with trying to log in before going to check your e-mail account and opeining up the link that was sent which allows you to activate your account. Am I right? I made the same mistake myself the first time I tried logging in.
redghost. No I haven't been to gothling.com but I will definitely check it out.
Sober. As Bateman said earlier, Der Uhu posted a thread on lagoth.net, inviting members of that site to join Schwarzes Hamburg. So far, me and Bateman are the only ones who took him up on his invitation.
SuperTorus. LA actually has a really thriving club scene. From watching TV you may get the impression that Southern California's club scene is limited to posh hollywood nightclubs and meat market discos. Well we actually got some of those, but we also have a hell of alot of goth and industrial clubs. Some of the clubs are small and others are pretty large, but there is definitely a place to go at least 5, if not 7 days out of the week. Halloween is a big deal here in the states, so there will definitely be one or two mega-type events happining here in LA in late October. Capacity at some of the Halloween events sometimes exceeds 5 or 6 thousand people. As far as Marilyn Manson goes, most goths and rivetheads hate him, a few adore him, and still others, like me, don't care one way or the other. From what I've heard though, his shows seem to be pretty interesting; though, I must admit that I don't really care too much for his music. I personally feel that there are much better bands that don't get the recognition they deserve because the media is too obsessed with focusing on his crazy stage antics and over the top public persona.
I wouldn't know how to compare the LA scene to Germany, but I will say that LA's scene is probably the largest and maybe even the best in North America. Even in New York City, the goth and industrial scene is limited to just two or three clubs, and most of those are small and constantly on the verge of closing. LA is like a great big Disneyland amusement park (I know Bateman understands what its like living close to Disneyland since he's from OC).
Der Uhu. Mr. Terminator is anything but a commie. I actually have a t-shirt that saids, "Welcome Comrade, to the People's Republic of California" (with hammer and sickle imprinted on the back), that I got at a gun-show in Pamona several years ago.
-
Schneeball: But a cute idea, isn't it? The governator as a commi? :D
By the way: Gothling.com is a goth-website from Minnesota.
I saw, that you have also the nick "Schneeball" at lagoth. Is there a story behind that name?
What you said about the goth scene in New York surprises me a bit. Isn't normally New York a place of a large variety of music styles and nightlife. Why is the gothic scene of all the scenes there so small? I found it very difficult to find a gothic forum in NY. There are some web sites and also one or two forums, but they are virtually dead. That means that only a small number of users is registered there, and they hardly write any posts.
The lagoth forum seems to be considerably different. You have over 1400 users, who are obviously very dilligent writers. Our forum here has only a bit more than 200 users, but it works very well and many users are pretty active here. It is actually running for quite a long time, but a few weeks ago, it was restarted and reorganized. We have for example no moderators any more which we had before.
But one thing is really missing at lagoth.com: Avatars
At last I would like to draw your attention to this thread. (http://www.schwarzes-hamburg.com/viewtopic.php?t=450[/url)
Und Tschüß!

Arnie Schwarzenegger as a communist? I couldn't see him as a communist. It goes against his terminator/Conan the Barabarian Hollywood persona. I actually think that he is slowly positioning himself as California's first fascist dictator. That's right! California, the most liberal state in the union next to New York. Arnie is going to purify the state by forcing undesirables to live in concentration camps where they will be force fed protein drinks and made to work out in the gym 16 hours a day. Political girly-men will be humiliated verbally and forced to watch Predator on DVD until they learn to accept the new state doctrine! He is currently raising an army of muscle bound uber-men, whose job it will be to abduct and deprogram liberal Hollywood hippies, eventually converting them into useful subjects of the state. His reign of terror won't end until there's a 24-hour gym on every block!
New York is a hip-hop town. They haven't had a thriving goth scene there since the late 80's, early 90's. Most big cities in the U.S. have small goth scenes with a few die-hards, but nothing like what LA's got. I remember traveling to Illinoise and Indiana a few years ago and noticing how small their scenes were. Kids often just hung out and drank coffee at the local Denny's restaurants or truck stops because there were so few places for them to go and socialize at. For example, Chicago's night-life is pretty much dominated by sports bars and techno/disco clubs. I believe there are maybe two or three goth/industrial clubs still operating around the city, but they are each relatively small and attract very few patrons.
If you travel through out most of the greater U.S., you might get the impression that goth is dead or that it barely exists. However, if you visit LA, you won't have to look hard to find a decent goth store or night-club, and goth and industrial bands are always playing large venues. I can't think of anywhere else in the U.S. where a band like Bauhaus, who haven't toured or recorded an album since 1983, can fill an Amphitheatre with a 10 thousand person capacity.

Well, its 12:40pm, I just get up so my mind is lost somewhere in my room. And also my english is.
That's why this is just a small welcome.
Hi schneeball, Hello Mr_Bateman and Welcome redghost :)

Note to myself:
The next time I have the chance to get a free trip to LA (E3 fair) I'll take the chance and visit these folks.

I wish I could comment about the goth scene in other states. The LA scene is a lot of fun outside of the goth stuff too though. This last weekend was busy with the inkslinger's ball (http://www.inkslingersball.com/) and some fetish art exhibit I didn't make it to. In mid October the Bizarre Vampire Bazaar (http://www.vampirebazaar.com/) is happening. Just south of us is a kick-ass Oktoberfest (http://www.alpinevillage.net/) that we make it to every year (with actual German people in charge) where I can dance with 90 year old women while wearing a Motorhead shirt. The Bondage Ball (http://www.bondageball.com/) happens a couple of times a year. Whenever you come here there will be something to do in addition to the weekly clubs and if you get bored you can go walk down Sunset and take a picture of where River Phoenix died outside the Viper Room.
I'm pretty happy with our scene, but that may be because I'm from Orange County, where people live like they drive - asleep and wearing horse-blinders, wondering what is on sale at Best Buy.
As for Manson, I actually like his music, I just never cared about his whole image (beyond my delight in pissing off the religious right). His stage performance at last year's Ozzfest was fun, but some dumbass put him on while it was still light outside so it killed the atmosphere. Also the place was crawling with Marines.... I think Manson is a really big deal for high school kids who haven't explored non-mainstream music yet, but most people I know either like his music or don't, but either way they don't think about him very much.
-
Bateman,
Must agree on Manson. He's just a big thing for the youngsters.
I'm just still pissed that I wasn't allowed to bring my bottle of booze to the stage last time he played on the meraluna festival (I was told he was afraid that some weired guys would throw the empty bottles ...)
That was ridiculous 'cause the place was covered with paving stones. It was even possible to buy swords and other medieval weapons at a sales booth.
Of course noone tried to harm him and noone throw a stone, but we've been forced to buy the expensive (and not really tastefull) beer :)

To dance with 90 years old ladies who wear Motorhead shirts? Well...if you like that....? You little gigolo!  Just kidding...
I have read a thread at lagoth about one of your trips to the Oktoberfest. Would you please tell your people the correct spelling of "Lederhosen", "Liebchen" and "Knackwurst" and that actual former Gestapo Agents are now probably too old to yank off anybody from the stage! So some (young) Samoans are probably the best choice. Also because you are regarded as skinny if you weigh less than a hundred kilos on Samoa. :P
Just to give you some information about the Oktoberfest. This is a bavarian thing and not all germans are running around in Lederhosen, eat sausages the whole day, drink beer from 1-litre jars and listen to that horrible Ufftata-music. We are North germans, Protestants, liberals... You know, the bavarians are a kind of our Texas. I guess you know what I mean. :D Ok, it is not as bad as England and Scotland. I mean they are still germans, but they are culturely slightly different. And I have to confess (not without being a bit jealous) that Bavaria is probably the most beautiful part of Germany. The Mountains, all the castles and the medievel town centers. Just beautiful. If it weren't inhabitated by....
I agree about what you wrote about Manson and young people. Here most gothics began with Depeche Mode, The Cure or Sisters of Mercy. In my case it was Sisters. I can still remember when I was still thinking that Sisters of Mercy were the coolest band on earth! Cute... Hey does Andrew Eldridge not live in Hamburg? Well, some of the locals may correct me if I am wrong. I have seen Manson once on the Hurricane festival in Scheeßel. He was playing in the bright sunshine. And yes...that really sucks! The atmosphere was completely disrupted. At least Rammstein had their show at night! Otherwise their fire show would have been useless!
-
@ Schneeball: Watching "Predator" the whole day? Well, it could be worse...it could be "Twins" or "Conan". With Predator you are still quite lucky.
And showing the people propanganda films, to let them exercise in the gym 16 hours a day, concentration camps, raising an army of super soldiers...that sounds to me like the Peoples Republic of North Korea. Kim Yong Schwarzenegger :D
Actually sad that in most of America this music is so less appreciated. I think there are a lot of creative people into that music. In Germany the scene made quite a development in the recent years. I have the impression that the actual dark and depressive Goth music gave way to more electronic or metal-like sounds which are easier to bear for non-gothics. Whenever I brought some of my friends who actually don't like that music they started to like it and they asked me if I could borrow them some CDs. I just want to say that goth music played in Discos (not what the people listen at home) became a bit more mainstream in Germany and sometimes you may think that you are in a Technodisco, only that everybody is dressed in Black. Which is sometimes a bit sad, I think.
-
That's interesting about the Bavarians. Liza (my wife) didn't know that either despite growing up near Rotterdam and going to Germany a lot, so I got to make fun of her for being a fake European. :) Most people I talk to, admittedly I mostly talk to liberal-minded people, agree that Texas could secede from the US tomorrow and we wouldn't mind.
I recently had the displeasure of watching a couple old Arnold movies and yes, Predator would be a treat compared to almost any other one. The first Conan was even good compared to most, although it was pretty funny watching someone that lumpy swing a sword. They were going for the "master swordsman" look; they achieved "weightlifter with sword" look. I was very young when I first saw Commando and the others so I remembered them being really good. I should have left it at that.
The Oktoberfest thing is fun in the same way that watching Army of Darkness is fun. It's just so dumb it's hilarious. Why on earth would a bunch of people from LA want to milk a cow or do the chicken dance to bizarre music played by people in little green outfits? I suppose I should start picking up some German anyway, if only to understand some of the music I listen to. It can't hurt to know what the hell Sven Vath is talking about.
And yeah, the problem I had logging in was from not responding to the intro email because the message telling me to respond was in German. I should have seen that one coming anyway since I'm on about 5-6 mailing lists at any time.
Anyone else like BSD or Linux?
